EMDR Therapy · Spokane, WA

Therapy for chronic pain, chronic illness &
Long COVID

Your nervous system can hold onto medical trauma long after the event itself, keeping pain and illness active. EMDR works with the brain and body together, helping your system feel safe enough to heal.

Understanding pain

Pain, illness, and trauma share the same wiring

Pain is real even when there's no clear medical explanation for it. It's processed by the brain and nervous system. When that system has been on high alert for a long time, it can amplify and maintain pain signals long after an injury has healed, or even when none is found. Chronic illness and Long COVID work the same way, and they rarely stop at the body. They reach into identity, relationships, work, and how you picture the future.

"I've grappled with chronic pain for most of my own life. That lived experience shapes everything about how we work."
— Christina Knudsen, Santosha Therapy founder

This pattern is especially common after medical trauma: dismissive appointments, endless testing, treatments that don't work, or years of feeling unheard by providers. The body learns to brace, and grief, anxiety, and frustration are natural responses to losing the life and energy you expected to have.

EMDR helps interrupt this loop by processing the experiences and beliefs keeping your system in a state of threat, so there's more room for contentment, not just coping.

You don't have to choose between your medical care and this work, they complement each other. We meet you exactly where your body is.

Our Approach

Calming the system so your body can heal

Treatment starts by processing the medical trauma, fear, and stuck beliefs that are keeping your pain or illness active, so your nervous system can come down from constant alert. As the brain feels safer, many people experience real, measurable reductions in pain and more capacity to heal. We pair this with somatic and polyvagal-informed tools, so your body learns a new baseline of safety instead of bracing.

This work is paced to your energy, not the other way around.
